Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Requests GBI to Investigate Deputy Shooting
Augusta, GA. – On June 22, 2015, at approximately 11:05 PM, the GBI was requested by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation that occurred at 2634 Blueberry Circle in Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia. At approximately 10:21 PM deputies with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Blueberry Circle address in reference to a subject with a gun. While responding to the residence deputies learned that the subject was threatening to shoot any law enforcement officers that would be responding to the residence. Upon arrival deputies encountered the subject inside the residence with an assault rifle in his possession. Deputies gave several commands for the subject to drop the rifle but he refused.
One of the responding deputies fired his department issued firearm striking the subject. The subject was transported to Georgia Regents Medical Center where he died as a result of his injuries. The subject is identified as Tyler James Wicks, 30 years old, of 2634 Blueberry Circle. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning at the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur, Georgia.
The case is currently being investigated by the GBI and upon completion will be turned over to the Augusta Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
