Dawson, GA – Dawson Police Chief Charlie Whitehead requested the GBI investigate an incident which occurred in Dawson last night involving an assault on one of its officers and that officer’s use of force during the incident.  At 10:16 PM last night, the Dawson Police officer responded to a call regarding a vehicle driving without its lights on with a passenger leaning out of the vehicle’s window holding what appeared to be a gun.  The officer responded to the area and located the vehicle on Orange Street.  During the incident, the suspect’s vehicle struck the officer’s vehicle and a pedestrian.  The officer discharged his firearm striking the suspect’s vehicle.  No one was shot during the incident.

The suspect’s vehicle has been recovered by the GBI.  GBI agents are processing the scene and continue to investigate the incident, including interviewing witnesses.  The person who was struck by the suspect’s vehicle has received medical attention.

The suspect in this investigation, Nicholas Undre Oxford, 44, of 581 Cherry Street, Dawson, Georgia, has been arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer and Obstruction of Officers Felony.  Oxford is being held at the Terrell County Jail.

When the GBI has completed its investigation, the file will be turned over to the district attorney for review and any action the district attorney deems appropriate.
