Grovetown, GA – On Sunday, June 29, 2014, at approximately 07:00 AM, the GBI was requested to assist the Georgia Department of Corrections with a homicide investigation that occurred at Augusta State Medical Prison.  The GBI Region 7 Field Office responded and began conducting an investigation. At approximately 06:00 AM, an altercation took place between two inmates incarcerated at the prison that resulted in the death of Shannon Levi Grier, 29 years old.  The identity of the second inmate involved in the altercation is not being released at this time pending consultation with the Augusta Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office concerning criminal charges. The second inmate has been transferred to another state prison by the Georgia Department of Corrections for security purposes.

Grier’s body was transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur, GA where an autopsy will be performed at a later time. The investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by the GBI, the Georgia Department of Corrections, and the Richmond County Coroner’s Office.
