HUMAN REMAINS ARE BELIEVED TO BE OF BERRIEN COUNTY MAN
Nashville- The human remains found in Madison County Florida on Friday are possibly of a Berrien County man. The burned remains were recovered on Friday and Saturday by the Madison County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) in a wooded area in Madison County, Florida. Florida Officials contacted the Berrien County Sheriff's Office on Saturday in reference to information obtained in their initial investigation. The GBI Douglas Office was requested to assist in the investigation by Berrien County on the same date.
The remains are believed to be of a 24-year-old Berrien County man. The man had not been seen since early in the week of September 28, 2009, however he had not been reported missing to the Berrien S.O. There has not been a positive identification made of the remains at this time. It is anticipated that the remains will be sent to the GBI State Crime Lab to assist in the positive identification of the victim and determining the cause of death.
John Dennis Woods, 36 years of age from Berrien County, was charged by the GBI late Monday, October 4, 2009, which Concealing a Death in reference to the investigation. GBI and Berrien County investigators traveled to Madison County on Tuesday , October 6, to assist Madison County and FDLE with searching for and obtaining additional evidence.
On Wednesday, October 7, 2009, GBI agents obtained additional warrants on John Dennis Woods for Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Firearm during commission of a felony.
The investigation is still on-going; therefore no other details will be released at this time. The investigation is being conducted by the Berrien County Sheriff's Office, GBI, Madison County Florida Sheriff's Office and FDLE.
