Norcross, GA (May 30, 2019) – On Thursday, May 30, 2019, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Norcross Police Department (PD) to assist with a homicide investigation. 

At approximately 12:55 a.m., the Norcross PD responded to a 911 call reporting a fight and gunfire at the Allround Suites Hotel located at 3175 Medlock Bridge Road.  Norcross PD officers located a deceased male in a hotel room who appeared to have been shot multiple times.  The victim’s identity is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification.

The investigation determined that Mustafa Powell, 36, confronted the victim over a narcotics-related issue and shot him.  During the confrontation, the victim returned fire and Powell sustained two gunshot wounds.  Powell fled the scene but was later found receiving treatment at the Gwinnett Medical Center in Duluth.   Powell was transported to the Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville where he is in critical condition.

Powell is charged with murder. 

The victim’s autopsy will be conducted by the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner’s Office.
