GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Atlanta
Atlanta, GA (April 2, 2019) – On Sunday, March 31, 2019, the GBI was requested by the Atlanta Police Department (APD) to investigate an officer involved shooting.
Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 12:57 a.m., an APD officer was driving on Metropolitan Parkway and was flagged down by a citizen who advised there was an armed individual in the area of the northbound entrance ramp of I-85 in Atlanta.
The officer made contact with the subject, who was later identified as Oscar Cain, 31. The investigatory stop led to Cain’s attempted arrest. As the officer tried to take Cain into custody, he ran and the officer pursued him through the woods towards the area of Connell Avenue SW. Cain did not comply with verbal commands and the during the incident, Cain reportedly brandished a firearm. The officer discharged his weapon, fatally wounding Cain. A firearm was found at the scene.
The officer was not injured during the incident.
The GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
