Decatur, GA (March 6, 2019) – On Tuesday, March 5, 2019, the GBI was requested by the DeKalb County Police Department to investigate an officer involved shooting.

Preliminary information indicates that DeKalb County Police officers responded to an armed robbery call at the Family Dollar located on 4787 Covington Highway, Decatur, GA.  A DeKalb County PD officer canvassing the area located an individual, identified as Steven Louis Goins, age 22, in close proximity to the robbery.  The officer attempted to take Goins into custody.  During the attempted arrest, the officer discharged their weapon, striking Goins.  Goins was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.  A gun and a bag of money were located in close proximity to Goins. 

No officers were injured in this incident.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
