Brooks County, Georgia (December 14, 2018) – On Thursday, December 13, 2018, about 12:45 p.m., the GBI was requested to assist in a death investigation of a male recovered in the Withlacoochee River off of Highway 94 / Georgia 133 in Brooks County, Georgia by Brooks County Sheriff Mike Dewey.

GBI Agents and Crime Scene Specialists travelled to the area where they met with Brooks County Deputies, Brooks County Fire - Rescue and personnel with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources who were continuing a multi-day search.  The search continued in an area where an adult male individual ran from a Georgia State Patrol Trooper who had conducted a traffic stop in the area this past Saturday night.  The decedent was transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Macon, Georgia where an autopsy will be conducted.  After the autopsy is conducted, the preliminary results will be provided to Agents conducting the investigation.  Agents have been and will be conducting interviews with all law enforcement involved in the case, any other witnesses and reviewing any available video or other evidence available in the case to determine what took place.  Once the investigation is complete, the case will be forwarded to the District Attorney for his review and any action he deems necessary.  This case is active and ongoing.
