GBI Investigates Officer-Involved Shooting Incident in Dallas, GA
Dallas, Georgia – On March 1, 2017, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was requested by the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office and the Dallas Police Department to investigate an officer-involved shooting incident.
Preliminary information provided by authorities indicates that at approximately 2:00 p.m., the Dallas Police Department was dispatched to the Rambo Trailhead of the Silver Comet Trail regarding shots fired and a man observed with a rifle. The Paulding County Sheriff’s Office also responded.
At the location, law enforcement found Daron Holcombe, 26 of Rockmart, in possession of a rifle. During their contact with Holcombe, officers reported he pointed the rifle at them. In response, Dallas Police Department Officer Phillip Burkett fired his service weapon at Holcombe, striking him. Holcombe was taken to Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, GA where he is listed in critical condition. After the shooting, Holcombe’s weapon was found to be a replica air rifle with scope.
The GBI will continue its independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident. Upon completion, it will be turned over to the Paulding Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for review.
