GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Jackson, GA
Jackson, GA – On Wednesday, March 30, 2016, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was requested by the Jackson Police Department to investigate an officer involved shooting in Jackson, GA that resulted in injuries to Thomas Lagano, age 52.
On Wednesday, March 30, 2016, at approximately 3:20 PM, the Jackson Police Department responded to a call regarding a domestic dispute with a possible firearm at 218 James Moore Drive in Jackson, GA. Once officers arrived on scene, they made contact with Linda Lagano (wife of Thomas Lagano) who advised officers that Thomas Lagano was being belligerent and had been recently consuming alcohol. Thomas Lagano saw the officers from the garage area of the residence and retreated back inside the home. Shortly after, Lagano exited the front door of the residence while holding a firearm and pointing it in the air. Officer Kevin Hill gave Thomas multiple commands to drop the firearm and he did not comply. Instead, Thomas lowered the firearm toward Officer Hill and Officer Hill fired one round from his service weapon striking Thomas.
Thomas was air lifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, GA where he is being treated for his injuries. The responding officers were not injured during the incident.
The GBI will conduct an independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident. When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Towaliga Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for any action they deem appropriate.
