Laurens County, GA- On Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at approximately 11:14 AM, inmate Jim Edward Lowery, 35, escaped from police custody during transport by Treutlen County Sheriff’s Office en route to the Laurens County Jail.  The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office has organized a manhunt and is actively pursuing Lowery with the assistance of numerous local, state, and federal authorities.  Lowery was incarcerated on charges of murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault on a police officer.  

Lowery was leg shackled and handcuffed with double locked cuffs.  He managed to get the shackles off of his legs as the vehicle he was being transported in arrived at the Laurens County Jail.  Lowery used the leg shackles to bust out the window of the patrol car and fled from the deputy.  The deputy pursued Lowery into the woods until he lost sight of him.  Lowery was wearing an orange jumpsuit at the time of the escape.  Lowery’s handcuffs were later found in the roadway still intact.  A perimeter was established by law enforcement and aviation and K9 assets are being utilized at this time.   

Laurens County Sheriff Bill Harrell is leading the manhunt operations.  More than 100 law enforcement officers from surrounding agencies are assisting in the search for Lowery.

Lowery is considered dangerous and the public is urged to remain vigilant.  The public is asked to report any sightings or suspicious activity to 911, or the Laurens County 911 center at 478-272-7985.
