Waynesboro, GA. – On Friday, September 26, 2015 at approximately 7:30 PM, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Burke County Sheriff’s Office to assist with a death investigation. Earlier that evening deputies with the Sheriff’s Office responded to a wooded area off of Watkins Pond Road where the body of a deceased male had been discovered by a hunter in the area. The victim appeared to have been in the area for several days and was in a state of decomposition.

On Monday, September 28, 2015, an autopsy was performed by the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Decatur, Georgia and the manner of death ruled a homicide. The victim has been identified as Michael Jones, 27 years old, of Augusta, Georgia.

The GBI and the Burke County Sheriff’s Office are continuing the investigation. The GBI is asking that anyone with information concerning this investigation to call the Burke County Sheriff’s Office at 706-554-2133 or the GBI Office at 706-595-2575.
