Jefferson, GA –  A three year old died from a gunshot wound on Sunday, March 29, 2015.  The Jefferson Police Department responded to a 911 call just after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday to an address on Fairfield Drive in Jefferson.  Arriving officers found the injured three year old outside of the residence and several adults trying to help the child.  It was reported the child accidentally discharged a handgun.  Jackson County EMS arrived and the child was taken to the Athens Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased.  The child was taken to the GBI Crime Lab for further examination.

The GBI Athens Office was called to assist with the investigation.   The GBI, along with the Jefferson Police Department, Jackson County Coroner’s Office and Jackson County Department of Family and Children’s Services, will continue to investigate this incident.  Once all the facts have been received, the case will be provided to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
