Quitman, GA (October 15, 2026) - The GBI has arrested and charged Quitman Police Chief Lawrence McGee, age 44, of Quitman, GA, with one count of Felony Theft by Taking and one count of Violation of Oath of Office.

On February 3, 2026, the Brooks County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI to investigate a theft allegation involving McGee. Preliminary information indicates that in January 2026, the Quitman Police Department received a donated handgun intended for use in a raffle for a regional traffic enforcement meeting. McGee instead kept the gun for himself, never including it in the raffle.

An arrest warrant was issued for McGee following the return of an indictment by a Brooks County Grand Jury. McGee was arrested on October 14, 2026, and booked into the Brooks County Jail.
