Cobb County, GA (May 27, 2026) - At the request of the Cobb County Police Department (CCPD), GBI agents are investigating an officer involved shooting in Cobb County, GA. Cortez Eatmon, 25, of Alabama, was shot and killed during the incident. No officers were injured.

Preliminary information indicates on May 27, 2026 at about 2:00 p.m., a department store employee contacted the Cobb County Police Department to report a shoplifting incident at Town Center Mall in Kennesaw. As CCPD officers arrived on scene, they observed a man matching the description provided by the caller, later identified as Eatmon, walking across the mall parking lot. When officers attempted to make contact with Eatmon, he ran away from the officers. An officer gave verbal commands for Eatmon to stop running, but Eatmon refused to comply. Another officer then attempted to tase Eatmon multiple times but was unsuccessful. Officers continued to give verbal commands until Eatmon produced a handgun and an officer shot toward Eatmon. Officers immediately rendered aid to Eatmon, and he was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Eatmon’s body will be taken to the Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once the investigation is complete, it will be given to the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
