UPDATE - August 21, 2024:

Carrollton, GA (August 21, 2024) – The GBI is investigating a shooting that occurred inside a home in Carrollton, Carroll County, Georgia. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI to conduct an investigation on August 20, 2024. One man is dead, and one deputy was seriously injured in the incident.

The preliminary information indicates that, at around 8:30 a.m. on August 20, 2024, GBI agents and Carroll County deputies were at a home in the 300 block of Don Rich Drive, Carrollton, Georgia, executing a search warrant associated with an ongoing GBI investigation. Carroll County deputies knocked on the door of the home, which was opened by Christopher Bly, age 40, of Carrollton, GA. Bly immediately retreated into the home, followed by the deputies. Bly produced an handgun and fired, striking himself and one of the deputies. Bly was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deputy was taken by life flight to an Atlanta hospital. The deputy remains in critical condition.

Evidence obtained during the investigation indicates that Bly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The shooting incident is being investigated by the GBI’s Atlanta Regional Office. The original search warrant was executed by agents with the GBI’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit. During the search, agents located and seized multiple electronic devices within the home which contained child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Carroll County District Attorney’s Office for review.

 

ORIGINAL STATEMENT:


The GBI is investigating a shooting incident that happened during the execution of a child exploitation search warrant.  A Carroll County deputy has been shot.  He is in critical condition.  The suspect is dead. The search warrant was part of an ongoing GBI investigation. We are working to gather additional details and will provide updates as soon as possible.
