Hart County, Hartwell, GA (April 29, 2024) – The GBI has arrested and charged Matthew Carey, age 41, of Bowman, GA, with Malice Murder, Felony Murder, and Aggravated Assault - Family Violence. 

On Sunday, April 28, 2024, the GBI was requested to assist the Hartwell Polce Department with investigating the death of Candy Downer, age 36, at the Daynight Inn, in Hartwell, GA.  

Carey was arrested on Monday, April 29, 2024. Carey is currently being held in the Hart County Jail.

Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Northern Judicial Circuit for prosecution.
