GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in DeKalb County
DeKalb County, GA (March 12, 2024) - At the request of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, GBI agents are investigating an officer involved shooting in DeKalb County, GA. Deontre’ Thomas, age 25, of Atlanta, GA, was injured in the incident. No officers were injured in this incident.
Preliminary information indicates on March 9, 2024, at about 1:15 a.m., Thomas was seen outside the DeKalb County Jail dropping off contraband to be brought into the jail. As officers attempted to make contact with Thomas, he ran down Memorial Drive, leaving his car behind. The car was parked on the street, and left running. Officers ran after Thomas but lost sight of him. Thomas came back to his car and encountered a deputy. The deputy fired his weapon, and Thomas drove away from the scene in his car. Officers chased the car but lost sight of it.
At about 2:30 a.m., the DeKalb County Police Department (DKPD) responded to a 911 call about a person who had been shot and was currently at a home on Emerald Drive, Atlanta, GA. Officers arrived at the home and found Thomas and his car that was involved in the incident outside the DeKalb County Jail.
Thomas was taken to a local hospital where he is in stable condition.
The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case will be given to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
