Buford, GA (August 3, 2022) – The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Hall County, GA. The Hall County Sheriff’s Office asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on August 2, 2022. One man was shot and is deceased. Two women were found dead in the home when deputies entered. No law enforcement officers were injured in this incident.

Preliminary information indicates that the Hall County Sheriff’s Office conducted a welfare check on the afternoon of August 2, 2022, at a home on Long Creek Drive. When they were unable to contact anyone at the home, a concerned relative went to the home attempting to locate his family members. Thang Duc Doan, age 51, of Buford, was at the home and told the relative that the family members were not there. Doan had what appeared to be blood on his clothing. The relative gave this information to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, who then ultimately secured a search warrant for the home.

At approximately 11:00 p.m., Hall County Sheriff’s Office deputies made entry into the home. Once inside, they encountered Doan wielding a knife.  Doan was shot by law enforcement and died. During a search of the house, deputies located Kim Oanh T Nguyen, age 42, and her daughter Lam-Ahn Tran, age 18, deceased.

Doan, Nguyen, and Tran are pending autopsy by the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation and upon completion of the investigation, it will be provided to the Northeastern Judicial Circuit District Attorney for review.
