GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Macon

Macon, GA (January 10, 2021) – On Saturday, January 9, 2021, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Region 13 Perry Office was requested by the Georgia State Patrol to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation.  

Preliminary information indicates that at 1:39 a.m., a Georgia State Patrol trooper observed a beige Honda Civic, driven by a male subject identified as Larry Marquez Bryant, Jr., 26, of Macon, Georgia, traveling on Mulberry Street near Second Street in Macon. Bryant was observed to have his phone in his hand while driving. The trooper initiated a traffic stop for the distracted driving violation. Bryant did not stop after the trooper turned on his blue lights and siren, and a chase then took place traveling at speeds over 60 MPH. Other GPS troopers joined in the chase.

The chase continued through the city of Macon and ended on Ell Street where Bryant wrecked the vehicle. Bryant then exited the vehicle and a foot chase ensued. During the foot chase, one trooper deployed his taser two times. A second trooper deployed his taser one time. Bryant was struck by one of the taser deployments but was not affected. Bryant continued to run onto D Street where he then fired a firearm at a Georgia State Patrol vehicle with a trooper inside the vehicle. The vehicle was struck five times on the driver’s side when Bryant fired at the vehicle. 

Bryant continued to run along D Street where he eventually threw the firearm into a trash can and surrendered to the troopers. Bryant was transported to the Bibb County Jail where he was booked for numerous traffic offenses to include distracted driving and DUI. Bryant is being charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and numerous other criminal charges.     

No officers were injured during this incident.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation of the officer involved shooting. Upon completion, it will be turned over to the Bibb Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
