GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Bibb County
Bibb County, GA (March 2, 2020) – On Sunday, March 1, 2020, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office to investigate an officer involved shooting.
Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 1:47 AM, a Bibb County Sheriff’s Deputy was conducting a business check and speaking with an employee outside of “Late Nite Macon” bar, located at 420 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. A male was seen running from the corner of Cherry Street, headed south on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. A short time later, a second male, later identified as Benjamin Curtis Bevins, age 29, rounded the corner, brandishing a handgun. Bevins fired a couple of rounds into the air as he was chasing the other male.
The deputy yelled for Bevin to stop and drop the weapon. A foot pursuit ensued. Bevin ran towards the alley located at Mulberry Street Lane.
Bevins was shot during the incident and was apprehended in the alley at Mulberry Street Lane.
Bevins was transported to the Navicent Health Center by ambulance and is listed in stable condition.
The Bibb County deputy was not injured during the incident.
The GBI will conduct an independent investigation and once complete will be turned over to the Bibb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
