GBI Investigates In-Custody Death in Monroe County

On Wednesday, January 15, 2019, at approximately 1140 p.m., the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office to investigate a death that occurred inside the Monroe County jail. 

The preliminary investigation indicates Joshua D. Marshall, 40, was arrested by Monroe County Deputies following a domestic dispute.  After arriving at the Monroe County Jail, Marshall was involved in an altercation with Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Jail employees. During the altercation, Marshall became unresponsive and was pronounced deceased at the Monroe County Hospital after life-saving efforts were unsuccessful.  

An autopsy was performed by the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office.  

Once the GBI investigation and autopsy report are complete, all information will be turned over to the Towaliga District Attorney’s Office for review.
