Hampton, GA (November 20, 2019) – On Wednesday, November 20, 2019, at approximately 3:52 a.m., the GBI Atlanta Regional Office was requested by the Hampton Police Department to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation.

Preliminary information indicates that earlier that morning, officers responded to 3 North Avenue, Hampton, GA, in reference to a welfare check. Officers encountered William Harris, 51, at the residence. While at the door of the residence, Harris told the officers that he was going to kill them. Harris then shot at the officers and an officer returned fire. Harris retreated back into the residence. Henry County PD SWAT responded and made entry into the residence and discovered Harris deceased. A gun was located in close proximity to Harris.

No officers were injured as a result of the shooting.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation of the officer involved shooting. Once complete, it will be turned over to the Henry County District Attorney’s Office for review.
