On June 2, 1997, Special Agent Troy Layne Pierce, Sr. was on his way to a training class when he was involved in a single-car accident. Due to his injuries from the accident, SA Pierce retired from the GBI on November 1, 1997, with 17 years of creditable service.

SA Pierce died of a severe infection he contracted due to the accident on December 2, 1997. He was 35 years old.
