Special Agent Robert Kirk was shot and killed while investigating a suspicious person in his neighborhood. It was later learned that the person was planning on killing his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend, but was interrupted by Special Agent Kirk.

The suspect was apprehended but escaped from the county jail in November 1988. In December 1988, GBI SAC Don Branch and a Thomson Police Department officer spotted the suspect, who was armed with a shotgun. The Thomson Police officer shot and killed the suspect when he turned on them with the gun.

Retired GBI Assistant Director Dan Kirk is the younger brother of SA Robert Kirk.

Those who knew SA Robert Kirk described him as a great agent, a dear friend, and a true hero who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The GBI remembers and honors Special Agent Robert M. Kirk. Thank you for your service and your sacrifice.
