Special Agent Welton L. Harrell died from injuries sustained in a car crash on December 23, 1964, eight miles west of Americus on US 280 in Terrell County. He was on the way to a reported shooting when he lost control and crashed. He passed away late that morning at the St. Francis Hospital in Muscogee County.

A portion of GA Highway 262 in Mitchell County is dedicated as the Special Agent 15 Welton Harrell Memorial Highway.
