GBI Special Agent
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Education - Completion of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university
- Must be age 21 or older
- Must be a United States citizen
- Vision Requirements:
- Distant vision - minimum vision of 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other eye, corrected (with glasses or contact lenses), and minimum of 20/200 in each eye, uncorrected (without glasses or contacts).
- Near vision- minimum of 20/40, corrected or uncorrected in each eye.
- Adequate depth perception and the ability to distinguish colors.
- Peripheral vision- at least 70 degrees in each eye.
Special Agents are required to meet rigid medical standards. The required medical examination will be at the expense of the applicant.
DUTIES:
Special Agents are classified as certified Georgia Peace Officers and they enforce the criminal laws of the State of Georgia. Specifically, Special Agents investigate criminal activities, conduct crime scene searches, interview and interrogate persons in connection with criminal cases being investigated, prepare detailed investigative reports, assist in prosecution of cases, testify in court, recover stolen property, gather information for the identification of persons and criminal intelligence, apprehend wanted persons and perform other related law enforcement duties.
ENTRY SALARY: $64,976.51/YR.
STATEWIDE ASSIGNMENTS:
Applicants must agree to accept an initial duty assignment on a statewide basis and must establish residency in their area of assignment. (Must be willing to relocate)

TAKING THE SPECIAL AGENT EXAMINATION

SELECTION PROCESS FOR GBI SPECIAL AGENT
Within several weeks after the Special Agent Exam is administered, those applicants who meet the established cutoff score will receive packets from the GBI Investigative Division naming the date, time and location of the initial interview.
The selection process for GBI Special Agent employment is designed to evaluate an applicant's suitability for a career with a state law enforcement investigative agency. Each applicant must achieve a competitive score on the Special Agent examination and must successfully complete each of the following:
- Initial personal interview
- Physical Fitness Assessment
- GBI administered pre-employment polygraph examination regarding illegal drug usage and criminal conduct
- Background investigation
- Interview with Deputy Director's Interview Board (Command Staff)
- Psychological and medical examination
- Pre-employment drug screening
- Peace Officer and Standards Training Council (POST) requirements
TRAINING:
Special Agents must successfully complete the 16-week GBI Basic Agent Course at the GeorgiaPublicSafetyTrainingCenter in Forsyth, Georgia. Specialized and advanced training is provided at planned intervals throughout a Special Agent's career.
PROMOTION:
All promotions in the Special Agent ranks are competitive. A formal promotion board ranks candidates based on job knowledge, work performance appraisals, training, and experience.
TRANSFERS:
Special Agents may request assignment transfers at any time; however, the granting of transfers is based upon the needs of the Bureau.
