On March 5, 1976, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Atlanta Field Office began investigating a robbery/homicide at Elm Street Liquor Store in Covington, GA.  The victim of the homicide was Thomas Blake Armstrong Jr., the owner of the liquor store.

Two weeks prior to this robbery/homicide, a robbery of another liquor store occurred in the Rockdale County area.  At this robbery, it was stated that one perpetrator entered the liquor store while the other perpetrator remained in a vehicle outside of the store.  In addition, it has been stated that the possibility exists that the same individuals could have committed both robberies.
