Calhoun, GA (September 22, 2023) – The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Gordon County, Calhoun, Georgia.  The Gordon County Sheriff’s office asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on September 22, 2023.

The investigation shows that Amar Touré, age 45, of Calhoun, came into the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office parking lot located on 2700 U.S. Hwy 41, Calhoun, entered the jail lobby, and briefly spoke with a jailer in the lobby.  Touré then left the jail lobby into the parking lot of the Sheriff’s Office.  Touré took a black handgun from his jacket and began firing at a Gordon County deputy parked at the end of the parking lot, near the south end of the sheriff’s office building. The deputy quickly moved his patrol vehicle behind other vehicles in the parking lot for cover from the gunfire.  While continuing to fire, Touré moved towards the deputy’s patrol car, forcing the deputy to move again to avoid the gunfire.

After hearing the radio traffic for help and hearing the gunfire, another Gordon County deputy came out of the sallyport of the jail with a rifle.  The deputy fired the rifle one time at Touré.  Touré then raised his hands and surrendered.

Touré was taken into custody and remains in the Gordon County jail.

No one was injured during the gunfire.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the Gordon District Attorney’s Office for review.
