Atlanta, GA (October 29, 2022) –  The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer involved shooting in Atlanta, Georgia. The Atlanta Police Department (APD) asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on October 28, 2022. One man was shot and killed. No officers were injured during the incident. 

Preliminary information indicates at 8:54 p.m., Atlanta Police Department officers were near 875 MLK Jr. Drive NW, Atlanta, GA when they heard shots fired nearby.  The officers saw a man, later identified as Willie Williams, age 35, directly across the street firing a weapon. The officers repeatedly gave commands to Williams who continued to fire his weapon.  Officers returned fire, hitting and killing Williams.

Williams was taken to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
