Atlanta, GA (July 1, 2021) – On Wednesday, June 30, 2021, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested to investigate an officer involved shooting.

Preliminary information indicates that approximately 1:02 p.m., a 911 call was placed to the Atlanta Police Department regarding a person shot on the 8th floor of 710 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, Georgia.  Two responding officers rode the elevator to the 8th floor.  As the elevator door was opening, a man later identified as Joseph Lee Humbles, 29, of Atlanta, immediately fired gunshots at officers, striking an officer in the face.  The two officers were able to return fire, which struck Humbles.  Humbles died as a result of his injuries.  The officer was transported to a local area hospital where he is in stable condition.

It was determined that just prior to the arrival of the officers, Humbles had shot an individual which resulted in non-life threatening injuries.  This individual was also transported to a local area hospital where he is in stable condition.

The GBI will continue to conduct an independent investigation.   Once complete, it will be provided to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
