Monticello, GA (April 26, 2021) – On Sunday, April 25, 2021, at approximately 9:00 p.m., the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of the GBI regarding a murder investigation in Monticello, Georgia. The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office advised Kira Ammons, age 41, of Monticello, GA, was shot multiple times and later died. Witnesses at the scene advised law enforcement that James David Mathis, age 38, of Eatonton, Putnam County, GA, was responsible for Ammons’ death. The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office contacted Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills and advised of the situation. Putnam County deputies responded to Mathis’ home in order to attempt to locate him. Upon arrival, deputies heard gunshots. During this time, a Putnam County deputy’s patrol vehicle was shot by Mathis. Shortly thereafter, Mathis was located outside of his home with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  

At approximately  10:18 p.m., the GBI was requested to assist the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office with the suicide investigation. No Putnam County deputies were injured during this incident.

Ammons and Mathis will be transported to the GBI Crime Lab for autopsy. Preliminary investigation is indicative that Mathis’ wounds are self-inflicted and Ammons' injuries are a result of a homicide.
