On Sunday, November 15, 2020, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Atlanta Police Department (APD) to investigate an officer involved shooting.

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 4:06 a.m., a confrontation between several males occurred outside of a nightclub located at 150 Pine Street NE which led to shots being fired.  An off-duty APD officer intervened and also fired his service weapon.  During the incident, Frederick Demor Asberry, 25, of Douglasville, was shot and killed.  An autopsy will be performed by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Byron Heron and Andrew Smith also received gunshot wounds.  Heron, 33, was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he is in critical condition.  Smith, 30, was also treated at Grady Memorial Hospital and later released.

The APD officer was not injured.

Several firearms were recovered at the scene. It is unknown at this time which weapons are associated with the gunshot wounds of the three victims. The GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once completed, the case will be submitted to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
