GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Atlanta, GA
Atlanta, Georgia – On Saturday, September 24, 2016, the Atlanta Police Department (APD) requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to investigate an officer involved shooting. The incident occurred at 1000 Collier Road, Atlanta, Georgia at the Collier Flats apartment complex between 12:40 a.m. and 1:00 a.m.
Preliminary information indicates that an off duty Atlanta Police Officer encountered Pedro Maldonado, age 41, in the parking lot of the apartment complex. Maldonado and another individual identified as Raul Delacruz, age 48, were reportedly standing in front of Maldonado’s apartment when they were approached by an armed black male who robbed Delacruz of a sum of cash. Maldonado reportedly fought with the robber as Delacruz left the area. Maldonado then ran towards Collier Road and produced a firearm. Multiple witnesses reported they heard gunshots. At this time, the Atlanta Police Officer, who had just completed his shift was in the area and also heard the gunshots. The officer reportedly observed Maldonado running with a gun in his hand. When the officer encountered Maldonado, he fired multiple times striking him. Maldonado was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he is listed in critical but stable condition.
Evidence recovered from the scene is consistent with Maldonado being armed and shot by the officer. There is also shell casing evidence present of shots being fired from a gun that has yet to be recovered. The GBI investigation is ongoing.
The GBI will continue its independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident. When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney's Office for review.
