GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Mableton, GA
Mableton, GA – On Monday, April 18, 2016, at about 2:50 AM, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) responded to the scene of an officer involved shooting at the request of the Cobb County Police Department (CCPD) that resulted in the death of Demetrius Dorsey, age 18, of Atlanta, Georgia.
Preliminary information indicates that on April 17, 2016, at about 11:00 pm, CCPD responded to an armed robbery alarm at the Marathon Convenience Store located at 6430 Mableton Parkway, Mableton, Georgia. Responding officers learned that the armed gunman had barricaded himself inside the store, taking two employees as hostages. The CCPD SWAT team deployed to the scene with crisis negotiators. During the standoff, Dorsey was shot by a SWAT officer. The two hostages were not injured during the incident. They were checked out by medical personnel on scene and released. The handgun belonging to Dorsey was recovered from the scene.
Dorsey was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he later died. An autopsy will be performed by the Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office. No officers were injured during this incident.
The GBI will conduct an independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident. When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Cobb County District Attorney's Office for any action they deem appropriate.
