GBI Requested to Investigate an Officer involved shooting in Savannah Georgia
Savannah, Georgia - On Wednesday, October 28, 2015, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by Assistant Chief Julie Tolbert, of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation. The preliminary findings are that just before midnight, on October 27, SCMPD Officers Ruben Colon, Michael Gonzales, Daniel Kang, and John Hauber were conducting a traffic stop near the intersection of 37 Street and Ogeechee Road. The officers stopped a vehicle that was being driven by 25 year-old, Tyrie Cuyler. During the traffic stop, Tyrie Cuyler presented a firearm and shot at the officers. Officers Ruben Colon and Michael Gonzales were shot during the altercation. Both officers were transported to Memorial Medical Center, where they were treated for their injuries and released. The officers returned gun fire during the altercation fatally injuring Tyrie Cuyler.
Three of the officers involved in the incident were wearing body cameras that captured the incident.
The investigation is in it's preliminary stage and is still ongoing.
An autopsy of Tyrie Cuyler’s body will be conducted by the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office.
