Snellville, GA (October 22, 2018) – On Monday, October 22, 2018, the GBI was requested by the Gwinnett County Police Department (GCPD) to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation at 2552 Mistletoe Lane, Snellville, GA. This incident stemmed from a shooting that occurred on Saturday, October 20, where GCPD Officer Antwan Toney was killed. One of the subjects involved in this incident, identified as Tafahree Maynard, 18, had fled from the scene and was located on October 22nd. GCPD officers encountered Maynard in a shed located on the property of the above address. Maynard initially would not comply with officers’ commands to show his hands. One officer attempted to utilize a Taser on Maynard which was ineffective. At that time, Maynard brandished a lawn mower blade from behind his back. One officer discharged his weapon, striking Maynard. Maynard was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the Gwinnett County District Attorney for review.
