GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Omega, GA
On Thursday, September 27, 2018, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Omega Police Department (OPD) to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation.
Preliminary information indicates that an Omega Police Officer was patrolling in Omega, GA. The tag reader in his patrol unit alerted on a passing vehicle for expired tags. The officer initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the vehicle did not stop. A chase ensued. The vehicle turned into a thick wooded area off Mitchell Story Road. When the patrol unit and the vehicle stopped, the officer gave verbal commands to the three occupants of the car. During this encounter, the officer fired a shot. Two passengers were transported from the scene by law enforcement. The driver, identified as Callie Turner, fled the scene but later that day came to the Omega Police Department.
Turne sustained minor injuries as she was running from the scene. She was treated at a local hospital.
No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident.
Turner was charged with Felony fleeing and attempting to elude, misdemeanor obstruction, and driving with suspended registration. The front passenger, identified as Richard Wagner, was charged with misdemeanor obstruction & felony possession of methamphetamine.
The GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the District Attorney’s office for review.
