GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in East Point, GA
On Friday, February 2, 2018, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was requested by the Atlanta Police Department (APD) to investigate an officer involved shooting.
Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 3:45 p.m., a male subject entered the O’Reilly Auto Parts store located at 1003 Cleveland Avenue in East Point. The subject initially asked for a car alternator. When the clerk returned with the item, the subject produced a handgun and stole the alternator. The subject left the store and crossed Cleveland Avenue where he encountered a taxi. The subject attempted to steal the vehicle at gunpoint, but the taxi driver sped away.
The attempted carjacking was witnessed by APD officers who confronted the man. Civilian witnesses initially reported that the subject fired at responding officers; however, the subject’s handgun was later found to be a BB air gun pistol (see attached photo). The subject was pursued to 1029 Cleveland Avenue where he was fatally shot by officers.
An autopsy will be performed by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office. The subject has not been identified.
The GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once completed, the case will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
