GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in DeKalb County, GA
DeKalb County, GA – On Wednesday, April 27, 2016, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) responded to the scene of an officer involved shooting at the request of the DeKalb County Police Department (DKPD) in Atlanta, GA.
Preliminary information indicates that on April 27, 2016, at approximately 7:51 AM, DKPD responded to numerous 911 calls of a suspicious person in the area of 3009 Green Oaks Circle Atlanta, Georgia in DeKalb County. The last 911 call was received at approximately 7:51 a.m.
A DKPD officer arrived in the area and made contact with a male who fit the description of the suspicious person. The officer attempted to speak with the male who became agitated and aggressive. The male produced a weapon resembling a machete and advanced on the officer in an aggressive manner with the weapon. The Officer attempted to gain control of the male with his ASP baton but was unsuccessful. The Officer then drew his duty weapon and fired shots, striking the male. The officer and responding EMS personnel rendered aid to the male. The male was transported to Grady Hospital where he later died.
A two to three foot piece of sheet metal fashioned into a machete like weapon as well as two other knives were found on scene.
The deceased male was sent to the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy will be conducted.
No officers were injured during this incident.
The GBI will conduct an independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident. When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office for any action they deem appropriate.
