A former Banks County Sheriff's Office Deputy Jailer was arrested today.  Jason Nathaniel Layfield, age 32, of Maysville, GA, was charged with misdemeanor simple assault and misdemeanor simple battery.  The charges stemmed from two separate events occurring between January 13 and 14, 2016 at the Banks County Jail.  On January 19, 2016, Banks County Sheriff Carlton Speed requested the GBI Athens office to investigate the incidents.   Layfield was terminated during the criminal investigation.  He had been employed since June of 2011. 

The facts of the investigation were presented to the Piedmont Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office and warrants were obtained.  Layfield turned himself into the Banks County Sheriff’s Office without incident.
