GBI Requested to Investigate a Police Use of Force in Chatham County
Savannah, GA – Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Chief Joseph H. Lumpkin, Sr. has requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to investigate a police use of force incident.
On Saturday, June 13, 2015, at approximately 7:30 PM, a 16 year old black male, was arrested by SCMPD officers after a foot pursuit. A physical altercation took place between the juvenile and officers during the arrest. Following the arrest, the juvenile was transported to Memorial Medical Center after complaining of shortness of breath. The juvenile was charged with Possession of Marijuana, Reckless Driving, and Obstruction of an Officer (felony and misdemeanor charges). The officers involved in the altercation and arrest were Sgt. Corey Schaff, Officer Antwan Diggs, Corporal John Eric Smith, Advanced Police Officer Michael Dobson, and Advanced Police Officer Phillip Collard.
