Lawrenceville, GA – The Gwinnett County Police Department has requested the GBI investigate a shooting involving two of their officers which resulted in the death of Joseph Roy, 72.  The initial information regarding the shooting is that two officers responded to 2853 Avalon Meadows Court in Lawrenceville this morning after a 911 suicide threat call was received at 10:44 a.m.  When officers arrived at that address, they were told Roy had barricaded himself in the bathroom.  It is reported that as the officers approached the bathroom, Roy opened the door, made verbal threats, and charged at the officers with a knife coming within 5 feet of the officers.  The officers fired a total of three shots striking Roy.  Roy was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.  No officers were injured during the incident.

The GBI will conduct a thorough investigation to determine what occurred during the incident.  When the investigation is completed it will be turned over to District Attorney Danny Porter for any action he deems appropriate.
