Valdosta, Lowndes County, Georgia (March 4, 2024) — The GBI has arrested and charged Shawn Haralson, age 54, of Statesboro, GA with 17 felony counts of Theft by Taking, and five felony counts of unauthorized use of a financial transaction card. The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office asked the GBI to investigate on April 3, 2023. 

The investigation shows Haralson who, at the time, served as the Superintendent for the Lowndes County School District, fueled his personal pickup trucks with school-owned fuel and then used it for personal travel outside of Lowndes County on multiple occasions. 

In the Fall of 2023, the case file was provided to the District Attorney’s Office for review.  

The Lowndes County Grand Jury reviewed the results of the GBI investigation, and on March 1, 2024, returned a true bill of indictment. 

Haralson was taken into custody on March 1, 2024, with the assistance of the Bacon County Sheriff’s Office. 

This case will be prosecuted by the District Attorney for the Southern Judicial Circuit. Anyone with information on this matter is asked to call the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Thomasville at 229-225-4090.
