Chamblee, GA (February 15, 2024) – At the request of the Chamblee Police Department, GBI agents are investigating an officer involved shooting in Chamblee, Georgia.  Tyrese Markee Simon, age 22, of Atlanta, GA, was shot and is in critical condition. Two officers and two firefighters were injured in this incident.

The preliminary information indicates on Thursday, February 15, at about 2:40 p.m., Chamblee PD received a call for service to a Wal-Mart in reference to a man, later identified as Simon, in the pharmacy area with a weapon. Dispatch advised the officer that the suspect was armed with a machete. As the patrol officer was responding to the Wal-Mart, she saw Simon walking along Chamblee-Tucker Road and made contact with him. As the officer was following Simon on foot, she gave him verbal commands to stop and show his hands. Simon continued to walk away from the officer while concealing his hands. Simon walked into the middle of Chamblee-Tucker Road, beneath the elevated MARTA railway, pulled out a machete, turned and faced the officer with the blade in hand, and charged towards the officer. The officer shot Simon multiple times. Officers and firefighters provided medical aid to Simon, and he remained combative, assaulting two officers and two firefighters while they were providing aid.

Simon was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
