Decatur, GA. – Dr. George Herrin, Jr., GBI Crime Lab Director, has been appointed to the first Forensic Science Standards Board of the Organization of Scientific Area Committees.  The appointments, made by the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Department of Justice, are to a newly formed board which will work to improve the scientific basis of forensic evidence used in courts of law.  The board will be dedicated to identifying and fostering development and adoption of standards and guidelines for the nation’s forensic science community.  Dr. Herrin is one of 17 academic researchers and forensic science experts appointed to the board in an effort to bring a uniform structure to what was previously an ad hoc system.  As a board member, Dr. Herrin will chair the Scientific Area Committee on Biology/DNA.
