Internship Program

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation Intern Program, which is administered by the GBI Personnel Office, is a valuable learning experience for college and university students interested in a criminal justice  related career. The length of the internship is one quarter or semester as determined by the intern's college or university, with the concurrence of appropriate GBI supervisory personnel.

ELIGIBILITY
The program is open to full-time students interested in a criminal justice related career who are currently pursuing a bachelor’s or graduate degree at an accredited college or university. Students must be juniors or seniors at a four-year college or university or first year graduate students in order to participate in the program. Applicants must meet the following criteria:

1. Citizen at least 18 years of age.
2. In good academic standing with their college or university.
3. Recommended by their college or university to participate in the program.
4. Must be enrolled in school during the semester the student plans to intern.

DISQUALIFICATION STANDARDS

Applicants will be disqualified from participation in the GBI Intern Program for any of the following:

• Prior convictions for a felony or for misdemeanors of a high and aggravated nature.
• Failure to complete the polygraph examination process.
• Deliberate misrepresentation or falsification of any application or background information.
• Conduct or activity which reflects a disregard for state or federal laws or which conflicts  with the standards of behavior or ethical principles of the GBI.
• Deliberate misrepresentation of illegal drug history in connection with the application.
• Illegal use of any drug while employed in any law enforcement or criminal justice position 
• or while employed in any position that carries with it a high level of responsibility.
• Sale or distribution of any illegal drug.
• Illegal use of any drug, other than experimental use of cannabis. Experimental use of cannabis will be determined by:
  1. Number of times used
  2. Frequency of use
  3. Age of applicant at time of use
  4. Circumstances surrounding use
  5. Use of cannabis within the past 2 years.
     
• Deliberate association of a personal nature within the past 12 months with any person who used illegal drugs in the presence of the applicant. Deliberate association will be determined by:
  1. Circumstances surrounding the incident.
  2. Location of incident.
  3. Applicant's response or lack of response to the incident.
     
• Driver's history which suggests a pattern of disregard for the law.
• Credit history which suggests fiscal irresponsibility.

• Program applicants must submit an Intern Packet (Application, Pre-Employment Questionnaire, Agreement on Guidelines for GBI Interns, Authorization for Release of Personal Information, and Waiver of Liability form) to the GBI Personnel Office by the established deadline of the quarter or semester in which the required internship is to be served. The Personnel Office will review the application to determine if the applicant meets the Internship Program qualifications.
• Program applicants will be scheduled by the Personnel Office for an interview with the supervisor of the work unit in which the internship is to be served. Applicants must ensure that their applications are signed by the appropriate Internship Coordinator at their school.  The supervisor will make the decision on accepting the intern applicant.
• Upon approval by the supervisor, the applicant will be fingerprinted and must successfully complete a GBI polygraph examination and background inquiry.
• Upon consultation with appropriate supervisors, the Personnel Office will place the applicant in a GBI work unit with consideration given to the needs of the appropriate Division, the geographic availability of the applicant, and the educational skills and background of the applicant.
• The GBI attempts to accommodate all intern applicants, but there are no guarantees that everyone who applies will be approved for an internship with the GBI.

GUIDELINES AND RESTRICTIONS

• Interns are not commissioned with sworn officer status.
• Interns will conform to the dress and conduct codes of the GBI.
• Interns will be directly responsible to the supervisory personnel of the work unit in which the internship is served and the supervisors are responsible for ensuring that the interns receive appropriate training dependent on their work assignments.
• Interns will be exposed as much as possible to the various operations of the work unit to which they are assigned.
• Interns will not be exposed to potential dangers or placed in life threatening situations.
• Interns will not wear any clothing that could be construed as a GBI uniform.

SUMMARY REPORT

At the conclusion of an internship, the intern will complete a written evaluation of the field experience, emphasizing the strong and weak points of the program and any recommendations for change. The appropriate GBI work unit supervisor will also complete a written evaluation of the student and the program just completed. Copies of the above evaluations will be forwarded to the student's college or university and to the GBI Office of Personnel for filing and for dissemination to appropriate supervisory personnel.
