Dublin, GA - Laurens County Sheriff's Office has requested the GBI investigate a police shooting which resulted in the death of David Hooks, 59. Preliminary information is that Laurens County deputies were executing a search warrant at Hooks' residence, 1184 Highway 319 North, East Dublin, between 10:45 and 10:50 PM on September 24. When the deputies went to the residence, a uniformed deputy went to the door, knocked on the door and announced "sheriff's department, search warrant" three to four times. Hooks came to the door with a shotgun pointed at the deputies. The deputies ordered Hooks to put the shotgun down. Hooks pointed the shotgun at the deputies in a more aggressive manner. Deputies then fired at Hooks striking him. Hooks was treated on the scene by paramedics assigned to the sheriff's response team. He was then transported by EMS to a local hospital where he later passed away.

Hooks wife, who was in the residence at the time of the incident, was not injured. No deputies were injured during the incident.

Hooks body will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur today where an autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow.

The GBI will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident to determine the facts of what occurred. When the investigation is completed it will be turned over to the district attorney.
