GBI Medical Examiner’s Office Receives Re-accreditation from National Association of Medical Examiners

Decatur, GA. -  The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been notified that its Medical Examiner’s Office has been re-accredited by the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME).  The GBI Medical Examiner’s Office was first accredited in August of 2006.

Georgia’s Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Kris Sperry said, “We are proud that the GBI State Medical Examiner’s Office has again been re-accredited by the National Association of Medical Examiners, demonstrating our commitment to professional excellence.  This accreditation is achieved by relatively few Medical Examiner offices in the United States.” 

In a letter to Dr. Sperry, Dr. David Fowler, Chairman of the NAME Inspection and Accreditation Committee wrote, “NAME accredited offices represent the highest quality of death investigation system. The citizens can be proud of the hard work, dedication, and leadership made by you and your staff in attaining this accreditation.”

The NAME Accreditation Program was created to improve the overall quality of medicolegal death investigation and is granted only to Medical Examiner Offices that meet stringent procedural guidelines and pass a thorough inspection.

The GBI’s Medical Examiner's Office provides complete forensic pathology services to 153 of Georgia's 159 counties in deaths which qualify as coroner cases under the Georgia Death Investigation Act.
