Augusta, GA (July 14, 2019)  – On Sunday, July 14, 2019, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation.

Preliminary information revealed, at approximately 5:00 a.m., the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office was called to the area of 12th Street and Maxwell Street regarding shots being fired in the area. Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area looking for the subject who was reportedly firing the shots. Richmond County Deputy Ray Parker encountered Malik Williamson, 33, of Augusta, in the 1100 block of Anderson Avenue which runs parallel to Maxwell Street. During the encounter, Williamson refused to obey commands given to him by Deputy Parker. As Williamson tuned to walk away from Deputy Parker, Williamson removed a knife with brass knuckle handle from his waistband at which time Deputy Parker discharged his duty weapon, striking Williamson.

Williamson was transported to Augusta University Medical Center where he is being treated for his injuries. Members of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office performed first aid on Williamson until EMS personnel could arrive to transport him to the hospital.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the Augusta Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
